Alexandra Baltyn

Piano Teacher in Cheltenham

Biography

I am a Peripatetic Piano Teacher in a Gloucestershire primary school and a private senior school in Cheltenham. I run my own piano teaching practice and also freelance for Gloucestershire Academy of Music leading percussion workshops at GAM and in schools all over the county.

I started learning the piano when I was a small child, because I loved its sound. I attained my ABRSM Grade 8 whilst at school, took A-Level Music at Sixth Form, which allowed me to further my studies at the University of Wales, Cardiff. I gained a Bachelor of Music Honours Degree focussing on piano performance. During these years I mainly concentrated on classical and contemporary music. I played the clarinet and double bass in orchestras, which provided me with a lot of performance experience. I also trained in conducting under Huw Gareth Williams at Cardiff University, which was another musical skill I would later implement. From 2016 until the pandemic lockdowns in 2019, I led, conducted and wrote arrangements for a children’s school orchestra in Cheltenham, putting on concerts at the end of every term.

After finishing university I embarked on a career as a piano teacher, pianist and freelance double bassist. I teach all aspects of music through the medium of the piano: simultaneously teaching theory, sight reading, improvisation as well as aural skills, and not just regurgitating notation.

After a few years I went on to study Musicology at the University of Warsaw, Poland, and gained an MA in 2009. Whilst studying academically, I furthered my piano repertoire in jazz, blues, boogie-woogie, and other modern styles under the renown jazzman and prolific teacher Wojciech Kaminski at the Komeda ASMRiJ (Pop and Jazz) Music School in Warsaw. During my time as a student I worked as the kapellmeister at the Basilica of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in north Warsaw. My role was to lead the choir rehearsals on piano and conduct in preparation for public masses and other performances.

Whilst in Poland I had the opportunity to learn Javanese Gamelan under the tutelage of members of the Indonesian Embassy and toured extensively with Warsaw Gamelan Group. This episode has supported my growth and experience as a musician in many ways. I brought this skill back with me to England and now lead gamelan and gamelan-based percussion workshops at Gloucestershire Academy of Music.

In 2014 I completed the EPTA Piano Teachers’ Course (Cert PTC), held at the Purcell School of Music near London, to continue my personal development and fine-tune my piano teaching skills to effectively help anyone of any age and ability to learn how to master this fantastic instrument.

Away from teaching I continue to play the piano, compose and perform. I have been involved and continue to work with several bands, music groups, and other collaborations. I have had the pleasure to work with big acts and famous producers, which has taught me a lot in not only performance, but music production as well. I believe this all to be very beneficial to my teaching approach, as it is one thing to observe and instruct, but quite another to sit down and go through the (sometimes painstaking) preparation yourself that playing, composing and performing demands! There is a selection of video links to some of my musical endeavours on this site.

My wide experience in teaching and playing aids me enormously to individually tailor ways that effectively promote positive learning and get results, which in turn provide satisfaction for all.
